Interactive voting: what it is, what it's for and how to set it up in five minutes
From a show of hands to voting from a phone: interactive voting turns your audience into participants. What it is, what types exist and how to set up your own step by step — in class, in the company or at an event.

Interactive voting is any vote where your audience responds live from their own device — usually a phone — and the results appear on screen instantly. It sounds like a technical detail, but it changes the nature of the session: the audience stops listening passively and starts to decide, weigh in and compare itself in real time.
How it works: QR, phone and live results
The modern mechanic is always the same: you project a QR code, each person scans it with their phone and votes from the browser — no app to install, no signup and completely anonymous (and anyone who prefers it has the free Votinova app for iOS and Android). Every vote reaches the projected chart instantly, updating live in front of everyone. Setting it up takes less than five minutes, and it works the same with twelve people in a room as with a thousand in an auditorium.
The types of interactive voting (and when to use each)
Multiple choice
Multiple choiceThe classic for deciding and polling: up to five clear options and a bar chart that grows live. Use it to choose between proposals, prioritise topics or take the pulse of a room.
Scale
ScaleFrom 1 to 5: satisfaction, agreement, energy. Perfect for measuring the mood before and after a session and showing the difference.
Word cloud
Word cloudEach person types one or two words and the cloud forms on screen, enlarging the ones that repeat. Ideal for opening a session, gathering expectations or summing up how people feel.
Quiz with a leaderboard
QuizQuestions with a correct answer and a projected ranking. By default every correct answer scores the same, with no speed pressure; switch on the optional speed mode and faster answers score more, never below half. The competitive version of voting: it hooks people in training and in team building.
Open answer and ranking
OpenFree-text answers projected as a wall (with moderation if needed), or lists to order by preference. For when closed options fall short.
Three scenarios where it shines
In class
A comprehension check in 30 seconds, a review quiz with a leaderboard, and participation from those who never raise a hand — anonymity is the great equaliser of the classroom.
In the company
An all-hands with questions to leadership voted on by the staff, anonymous retrospectives, team decisions made with data instead of with the opinion of whoever speaks loudest.
At events and assemblies
Live feedback on talks, prioritising audience questions and clean counts for the minutes — no ballot papers and no counting hands.
How to set up your vote step by step
1. Create the session and the questions
Write each question with clear, non-overlapping options. Less is more: one good vote per block of content is worth more than five in a row.
2. Choose the right type
Decision → multiple choice; mood → scale; ideas → word cloud or open answer; knowledge → quiz. The type determines the chart your audience will see.
3. Project the join code
QR + code on the big screen at the start, and kept visible for the rest of the session for latecomers.
4. Open the vote and give 30–60 seconds
The vote counter climbing on screen does the marketing for you: nobody wants to be the missing vote.
5. Comment on the result
Spend a minute reading the chart out loud and reacting to it. That is what turns a vote into a conversation — and what guarantees they will vote in the next one.
What if I use PowerPoint?
It is the most common worry: “my presentation is already done.” With Votinova you don't rebuild it — you import your .pptx and the slides stay faithful to the original, with votes slotted in wherever you like; or you use the PowerPoint add-in to launch them without leaving your presentation. The audience joins just once with the same QR for the whole session.
As for cost: free up to 50 participants per session with unlimited questions; the Pro plan (34 €/month, with −20% if annual, and cancellable whenever you like) raises the cap to 1,000 participants and unlocks all nine question types; and for a one-off event there are single-use passes for up to 2,000 or 5,000 people.
Frequently asked questions
- What does the audience need in order to vote?
- Just their phone: they scan the QR or type the session code in the browser and vote right away, with no app to install, no signup and completely anonymous. Anyone who prefers it can also use the free Votinova app for iOS and Android — with it installed, scanning the QR opens the session directly.
- Is interactive voting anonymous?
- Yes. Votes are cast with no account and no name, and only aggregated results are shown, which makes it suitable for sensitive questions in companies and assemblies.
- How many people can vote at once?
- With Votinova, up to 50 participants per session on the free plan and up to 1,000 on the Pro plan (with metered overage); for large events there are single-use passes for 2,000 and 5,000 participants, with the platform tested at that scale.
- Can I run an interactive vote inside PowerPoint?
- Yes: you can import your .pptx file keeping the slides faithful to the original and slot the votes in between, or use the PowerPoint add-in to launch them from your own presentation.
